TweetDeck Releases HTML5-Based App In The Mac App Store

Following the release of Twitter 4.0 for iPhone, TweetDeck has released a new, HTML5-based version of its Mac app in the Mac App Store. Unlike TweetDeck’s previous Adobe AIR apps, this new version is simply a web-based client.

The app is available to download for free in the Mac App Store. TweetDeck allows you to show your Facebook and Twitter activity side by side in the app’s column-based layout.

You can tell that the app is based on HTML5, which is a little disappointing for those of us that wish TweetDeck would introduce a native Mac app. Still, it’s better than AIR, right?

Google Currents Flipboard killer launches today on iOS and Android

As we reported over on the sister blog, Google just launched Currents, their Flipboard/Pulse style reader for iPhone and iPad (and I guess Android too).  Head over for the details.  (Yes, 9to5Mac is a launch partner so look for us on the App!)

Google Currents is now available for download in Android Market and the Apple App Store for US users.

Twitter Releases New iPhone App

Today, Twitter announced a new design for the popular micro-blogging site that will start rolling out over the next couple of weeks, which they hope will make it easier than ever to connect with other users and discover great new content.

If you go to Twitter.com, you won’t see the sexy new interface for a while yet, but as part of their push to update all officially supported Twitter platforms to the new paradigm, Twitter has pushed out a totally overhauled version of the Twitter for iPhone app.

Twitter for iPhone 4.0 is a free download, and by all accounts, it’s even faster and more pleasant to use than ever before.

The main addition to the new Twitter app is four new buttons that act as hubs for the way you interact with Twitter. The official description lays out the methodology of the hubs:

Home is where you start from: a personal collection of Tweets from the sources you care about. The Tweet details show rich information such as replies, retweets and embedded images.

Connect is the place to see who followed or mentioned you, retweeted or favorited one of your Tweets. It’s where you keep the conversation flowing.

Discover is where you can tap into the stories and trends people are talking about in your world. You can also find friends, browse interests, and explore hashtags here.

Me puts you and your interests front and center. From here you can exchange Direct Messages with your followers.

The new app looks great, but the changes haven’t yet come to the iPad version, so unless you have an iPhone or iPod touch, you won’t see any changes.

What do you think of the new Twitter app? Let us know.

Porn Star Reclaims Lost iPhone Using iCloud And Borrowed Muscle

Porn star Jesse Jane has become one of the latest iOS users to recover a stolen purse — with her iPhone inside — using Apple’s Find My iPhone feature. After her device was stolen, Jane took to Twitter to inform her followers that she had successfully tracked down her device, and she kept them updated on its recovery.

Having discovered the device was in Hollywood, Jane enlisted the help of her friend, “Big Joe,” who took her to recover the device.

There’s no doubt that without the help of Find My iPhone, Jane wouldn’t have recovered her iPhone or her purse. She’s still looking for her diaphragm.

Alec Baldwin Gets Thrown Off American Airlines Flight For Playing Words With Friends On iPhone

Like many of us, 30 Rock star Alec Baldwin has a love for Apple’s iPhone. He frequently uses the device to send messages to his Twitter followers, and his addiction the the popular word game Words With Friends recently got him thrown off an American Airlines flight to New York.

According to Yahoo! news, Baldwin was not willing to put Words With Friends away while the plane idled at the gate:

The “30 Rock” actor was playing a game called “Words with Friends” while the plane idled at a gate Tuesday, said Baldwin’s spokesman, Matthew Hiltzik.

“He loves `Words with Friends’ so much that he was willing to leave a plane for it,” said Hiltzik, who added that Baldwin boarded another American Airlines flight to New York.

Baldwin kept his Twitter followers up to date, with a message that read:

“flight attendant on American reamed me out 4 playing Words With Friends while we sat at the gate, not moving.”

He also stated that this would be his last flight with American Airlines.

Jailed Russian Blogger Tweets Instagram Pic from Police Van

The smiling faces make it look like a rowdy night out, but this jubilant photo was snapped with an iPhone in the back of a Russian police van.

Yesterday, Moscow-based blogger Alexey Navalny was carted away by the authorities while documenting the massive protests following the country’s contested parlimentary elections.

“With my lads on the police bus. They all say hi,”  Navalny tweeted in Russian. An hour later, he posted another Instagram photo, this time a group portrait in the Izmailovo jailhouse of everyone arrested.

Fittingly, Navalny’s trial was live-tweeted and documented with photos from the courtroom today. Along with Iliya Yashin, an activist from the Solidarnodst movement, Navalny was sentenced to 15 days in jail for his role in a protest against Vladimir Putin’s rule. He was charged with obstructing the course of justice.

“There is not a single doubt that my case is under the special control of the party of crooks and thieves,” Navalny told reporters in a courtroom before being charged, referring to the term he uses to describe Putin’s United Russia party, Reuters reports.

This is the latest we’ve seen of Instagram’s “fun and quirky” iPhone app capturing the news of the day – it was used to create some of the most haunting images of the London riots.
